Briefing: The State of Financial Literacy and Wealth in the United States


On Thursday, October 19, 2023, the Financial Literacy and Wealth Creation Caucus hosted a briefing on The State of Financial Literacy and Wealth in the United States to set the stage for the work of the Caucus going forward.
The panel of experts included Under Secretary Don Cravins, Jr. at the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency (MBDA); Billy Hensley, Ph.D., President and CEO at the National Endowment for Financial Education (NEFE); Fiona Greig, Global Head of Investor Research and Policy at Vanguard; and David Silberman, Senior Advisor at the Financial Health Network (FHN). The discussion was moderated by Tim Shaw, Policy Director at the Aspen Institute's Financial Security Program (FSP).

Co-Chairs Joyce Beatty (OH-03) and Young Kim (CA-40) delivered opening remarks about how their personal and professional backgrounds reflect a commitment to financial education as a tool for wealth-building and economic stability. Congressional staff and industry stakeholders in the financial literacy space attended the briefing.
